Life is hard enough without suddenly coming face to face with a grinning corpse…especially when the corpse belongs to the father you’d been desperately trying to escape from! Not only that, no-one is bothered about how he died. He was only an oyster-seller after all. Thegns and reeves have more important things on their minds, first and foremost finding a way to drive the Danes from Wessex. Winfrith does get her long-held wish. She no longer has to keep house for her father. She escapes from Twyford…but at what cost? She is dragged off to Winchester amid suspicion that her father had been involved in forgery. No evidence is offered to prove his guilt, but nor is there any sign anyone will look for his killer unless Winfrith sets about the task herself. Her chances of success look slim in a place where she knows no-one and information is hard to come by. Then, just when she believes she is making some headway, a coiner implicated in the forgery is found drowned. Has asking questions now become just too dangerous?

I read this book with no preconceived ideas or thoughts about either the author or the story. The opening is interesting enough and the plot starts to build nicely, albeit a little slowly. The imagery created for the period in which the story is set is quite good, although at times I feel the author is trying a little too hard to use outdated or obsolete words to create the medieval ambience. (I was forever reaching for the dictionary to try and find what some of the words and phrases meant. Perhaps more a reflection of me than the author.:))The outcome is a little predictable and the climax is overwhelmingly disappointing. The ending is sudden and short. A few of the story's threads are brought to a rapid and unsatisfying conclusion and some of the key characters are left in limbo. Still a reasonable read. It was compelling enough for me to read the entire novel and not cast it aside as too uninteresting.Product details
