The Love Knot A Regency Romance Book One of the Ramsay Saga 1 edition by Elisabeth Fairchild Literature Fiction eBooks
This is a beautiful love story ~ lyrical, moving, romantic and passionate ~ and by passionate, I don't mean sexual intercourse. If you are looking for the usual "modern" historical romance nonsense filled with anachronisms, convoluted plots, rakish Heroes and virginal heroines jumping into bed with the aforementioned hero at the drop of a hat, you won't find it here. In this story, the H (Miles) is smitten with the h (Aurora) at first sight. She, however, has her mind set (but not her heart) on snaring Lord Walsh in an attempt to save her family from penury. Her brother has gambled away the family home and lands, so she is in a desperate position. Miles offers his help in the form of lessons ~ dance, social skills, dressing attractively, etc., all while wanting her for himself. I loved how the author didn't make Miles a typical alpha Hero, running away from love and denying his feelings until the bitter end. Miles knows what he wants and sets out to get it. He slowly and gently courts Aurora under the guise of helping her win Lord Walsh, carefully reeling her in with his wit and charm. Poor Aurora is conflicted throughout, trying to do what her head tells her, while her heart pulls her in a different direction. The ending was full of romance, but was a little abrupt, but that seems typical for this author. One little quibble- I believe Lord Walsh was an Earl, yet twice in the story he was addressed as "Your Grace" ~ an unusual slip for Elisabeth Fairchild.Product details

The Love Knot A Regency Romance Book One of the Ramsay Saga 1 edition by Elisabeth Fairchild Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
A rich exploration of gender and social norms; a novel of ideas with engaging characters; a portrait of intelligent people engaged in learning skills that don't come easily to them.... I have to read it again!
I've never read anything by Elisabeth Fairchild before, but I see from other reviews that this is not her best work. At any rate, I'm not impressed. The plot is muddled and the characters are neither plausible nor engaging. I didn't really care what happened to any of them.
Generally I like Fairchild's novels, although as I wish other authors would do, I wish she would leave out all references to sexual innuendo or private thoughts. I like a good 'trashy' novel as much as others, but I'm a pureist when it comes to regency. All in all this is not my favorite of hers as I found it a bit slow.
I like Regency theme stories but found this one a bit bland and not as detailed as some other authors.
I was surprised and really liked this book. Well written and a good story with plenty of romance. I will now look for more of her books!
One of Elisabeth's best stories that begins one of the best tales of a family ever. Don't miss any of them. I will revisit these wonderful characters again and again. A must for your Regency library!
I enjoyed The Love Knot, the opening title in the Ramsay series. The setting of the the Love Knot is, almost exclusively, at Hokham Hall, home of Thomas Coke, the famous agricultural reformer, with the main characters his guests at a house party.
I like the H of the Love Knot, Miles, who is, thankfully, out of the ordinary as a HR hero. He isn't very tall. He has speaking eyes. He isn't blindingly handsome, even if he is exquisitely groomed and attired. He is, however, an honourable man. He may lie, by omission, to save the feelings of others, but he doesn't lie about the important things. He has integrity. He loves and appreciates and listens to his sister. He is well-read and interesting. He is never cruel. In fact, he is empathetic (keep an eye out for the incident in the attic and the way he reacts when being told the h is afraid of the dark). He is blindsided by love at first sight and yet, even when there is a possibility that he will lose the h to another, he doesn't use the secret that would help him. In fact, while Miles isn't an exciting rogue, he is lovely on many levels that matter. He never disappoints as a h, as a lover, as a brother and, finally, as a connoisseur of hidden beauty (as well as the overt). In conclusion, he is a highly satisfactory H.
It is impossible not to like the h, Aurora. She is also honourable and honest, even when trying to get Lord Walsh to propose to her (for example, there is no suggestion of compromising him, even when she becomes desperate). She is driven by her desire to save her family property. She works hard, loves the land, has an encyclopaedic knowledge of agriculture, but is hampered by lack of social graces and having had no-one to guide her with, amongst other things, clothing choices. She would love to travel and have adventures, but becomes aware of how insular she is in comparison to people like Miles and his sister.
The coming together of Miles and Aurora is, in some ways, like chalk and cheese, but it works. Miles emphasises the advantages of their differences in a witty query and riposte with their host, as they are walking with Aurora to watch a stallion mate with a mare (where, by the way, it is no surprise that Aurora is the only woman).
Fairchild's research skills (the sheep shearing offers one example of many) are, as usual, impressively evident, without becoming overwhelming in detail. The introductory archery scene is well executed. The fan scene is gorgeous. So is the love knot. The Coke portrait, the paintings in the attic and the watercolour all add further depth and colour and romance and lust and passion.
In fact, this love story is full of romantic passion, right to the final rain-soaked scene. It is also the story of a smitten H pursuing the h, rather than the h pining for him from the get go. A refreshing change from the usual recipe.
A solid four stars.
